Grandpa Tried to Help… and Made Everything Worse!
An elderly woman stood nervously before the judge after being arrested for shoplifting at a small grocery store.
She looked harmless enough — tiny frame, gray curls, old handbag clutched tightly in both hands.
The judge adjusted his glasses and asked gently,
“Ma’am, what exactly did you steal?”
The little old lady lowered her eyes and quietly replied,
“A can of peaches, Your Honor.”
“And why did you steal it?” the judge asked.
The woman sighed.
“My husband and I are struggling financially. We don’t have much food at home, and… I was hungry.”
The courtroom fell silent for a moment.
Even the judge looked sympathetic.
After a pause, he asked,
“How many peaches were in the can?”
The old lady thought for a second.
“Six.”
The judge nodded slowly.
“Well then, I suppose the law is the law. I sentence you to one day in jail for each peach in the can.”
He tapped his pen against the desk.
“That will be six days.”
Before the judge could move on, the woman’s elderly husband suddenly stood up from the back of the courtroom.
“Your Honor!” he shouted.
The judge looked over.
“Yes, sir?”
The old man cleared his throat and said,
“She also stole a can of peas.”
