Elon Musk is facing cri.ticism after making what many have called a painfully unfunny joke to former President Donald Trump during a recent cabinet meeting
The billionaire entrepreneur has become increasingly involved in federal matters after being named head of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE
Though not a formal government agency, DOGE serves as an outside advisory group to Trump on managing federal expenses
Musk’s presence in this unofficial role since January has stirred controversy, leading to public backlash and even boycotts of Tesla, with some showrooms being vandalized
A video from a cabinet meeting discussing Trump’s first 100 days in office has since gone viral, but not for the conversation that took place
What grabbed viewers’ attention was Musk’s eye-catching outfit at the White House, where he appeared wearing a large red hat stacked on top of a black one

The top hat read “the Gulf of America” a jab at Trump’s reported desire to rename the Gulf of Mexico
In the clip, Trump notices the double hat and says, “Elon, I love the double hat, buddy. He’s the only one that can do that”
Musk responds with a line that triggered a wave of secondhand embarrassment online saying “Well Mr President they say I wear a lot of hats and it’s true even my hat has a hat”
Social media users quickly reacted with disdain flooding X formerly known as Twitter with ridicule
One person wrote “Seriously unfunny but trying so hard”
Another said “Never seen anyone look so awkward in a hat he should be taking it off not stacking it”
A third added “Why is he so insufferably lame”
One more chimed in “Elmo is so desperate to be funny it’s painful to watch”
Another user said “Elon is living proof that no amount of money will buy a personality”
And someone else commented “F***ing clowns clowning around while the country burns”
This is not the first time Musk’s White House attire has raised eyebrows as he’s previously been spotted in Trump-themed hats and slogan-filled t-shirts during official visits
